Gilles Muller and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga meet Monday in the first round of the 2015 Wimbledon.
Gilles Muller has been busy since the French Open, playing singles and doubles matches, which includes taking Andy Murray to three sets in Queen’s. Overall, Muller is playing some solid tennis, winning five of his last seven singles matches. Muller is hitting the ball well, holding serve and doing a good job of limiting his unforced errors as of late. However, Muller has always had trouble against the better tennis players in the world, as his last win over a top-10 player was back in 2013, and has had just two since 2008. Muller has been bounced in the first round in five of his last 10 major appearances. Muller has advanced past the first round in four of his seven appearances in the Wimbledon.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga should be fresh entering this match as he has not played since reaching the semifinals of the French Open. Tsonga has won eight of his last 11 matches and seems to be in better form than we’ve seen in years. Tsonga has his power back, is moving well and has been hitting his winners at a high clip. However, consistency has been an issue with Tsonga the last couple of years, especially in majors where he tends to disappear at times and disappoint. Still, Tsonga hasn’t been eliminated in the first round of a major since the 2007 Australian Open. Tsonga has been bounced in the fourth round or earlier in his last two Wimbledon appearances.
This will be the fourth meeting between these two, and Muller leads the series, 2-1. The last time these two met was in the Moselle Open in 2014, their only meeting in the last eight years. Muller’s wins over Tsonga came in the 2007 Besancon Challenger and 2005 Cordoba Challenger. This will be the first time these two have played on grass.
To me, this is a no brainer. Tsonga should have no problem winning this match if he’s in the same form he was in the French Open. Muller has issues against upper tier players, and Tsonga has him beat in majors experience and rest. This line is a steal even if it is a little heavy on chalk.
