The Line: Leonardo Mayer -240 / Marcel Granollers +200 -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds
Marcel Granollers and Leonardo Mayer meet Wednesday in the second round of the 2015 Wimbledon.
Marcel Granollers is coming off a two hour, straight sets victory over Janko Tipsarevic. Granollers got 71 percent of his first serves in play and won 72 percent of those points. Granollers won 77 percent of his net points and broke on five of his 11 chances overall. Granollers had four aces and just 29 unforced errors, playing an overall solid clean game. The thing Granollers needs to improve on is the fact he won just 40 percent of his second serve points. Granollers has been eliminated in the second round in three of his last four grand slam appearances. Granollers has made it out of the second round in a grand slam just three times since 2012.
USA TODAY Sports
Leonardo Mayer is coming off a three hour straight sets match over Thanasi Kokkinakis. Mayer had 15 aces, got 65 percent of his first serves in play and won 80 percent of those points. Mayer won 81 percent of his net points and hit 59 winners. Overall, Mayer controlled the pace of the match and was hitting his spots with consistency. However, Mayer could improve his 36 unforced errors just a tad, and needs to do better breaking, as he had just two breaks on 10 chances. Mayer has now made at least the second round of a grand slam in nine straight events. Mayer made the fourth round of the Wimbledon last season.
These two have played each other three times, and Granollers has won two of those meetings. The last time these two met was in 2013 in Kitzbuhel, a match that was decided in straight sets by Granollers. Mayer’s only victory over Granollers was in the 2007 US Open. This is the first time these two will play on grass.
I like Mayer to win this match, as he’s in better form and looked much sharper in his opening match. The past history doesn’t mean much considering they’ve played just once in the last eight years. Mayer is the better player and in far better form.
