Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Gael Monfils meet Saturday morning in the semifinals of the Monte Carlo Masters.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is coming off a three set victory over Roger Federer, as he looks to build momentum heading into the French Open. Tsonga has won eight of his last 10 singles matches and hopes he can continue this consistent play throughout the year. Tsonga has been a hit or miss player the last few years when at one point he looked like he was one of those guys who could push the big four on a consistent basis. However, right now Tsonga is in great form and looks to make his first final appearance of the 2016 season. If Tsonga continues to serve well and limit his unforced errors, he has a great chance to reach the ATP World Tour Finals at the end of the year for the first time since 2012.
USA TODAY Sports
Gael Monfils is coming off a straight sets win over Marcel Granollers and has yet to drop a set this tournament. Monfils has won 10 of his last 12 matches and looks like a completely different player than we’re used to seeing. Monfils looks more focused, as the antics have died down and he looks more interested in winning than pleasing the crowd and throwing points away. If Monfils can continue to play at this level and take tennis more seriously, he’ll have a shot to sneak back into the top-10 at some point. And while top-10 players haven’t been kind to him lately, Monfils can really turn some heads and make a climb up the rankings by winning this match.
These two have met seven times in the past, and Tsonga has won five of those meetings. The most recent match was in the 2015 Miami Masters, a match Monfils won in straight sets. The last four meetings between these two have been split down the middle.
As we’ve seen with their recent history, this match could truly go either way. Tsonga has the power and the service advantage, but Monfils is the ultimate shotmaker and is a nightmare when he’s playing to win. You guys know I’m a big fan of Monfils and love this player we’ve been seeing recently.
In a toss up, I’m siding with Monfils to get the monster victory.
