Virginie Razzano and Monica Puig meet Wednesday in the round of 16 at the Strasbourg Open.
Virginie Razzano is coming off a straight sets victory over Yaroslava Shvedova that took 18 games to decide. Razzano is looking for consistency after winning seven of her last 10 matches when you include qualifying. Razzano has had a really rough 2016 as the losses have piled up, and she’s clearly a shell of the player who was a top-20 player several years ago. There’s really been no in between with Razzano, as when she’s good, she’s very good. However, when she’s bad, it can get very ugly quickly. Razzano did make it to the semifinals of last year’s Strasbourg Open, so she can’t be taken lightly in this match.

Monica Puig is coming off a three set win over Sara Errani that took 26 games to decide. Puig is also trying to find her form, as she’s won eight of her last 11 matches when you include qualifying. Puig has had an OK 2016 given the circumstances, but she’s still looking for that breakthrough performance to really take her career to the next level at 22 years old. Puig continues to flirt with being a top-50 player but needs consistent deep runs in tournaments like this in order to finally get over the hump and introduce herself as a serious threat to the rest of the pack. Puig has won six of her seven matches at the Strasbourg Open, which includes the 2014 title.
The only match between these two was in the 2012 100k Poitiers, a match Puig won in three sets. The match took 28 games to decide. This will obviously be the first time these two meet on clay.
Puig is the younger and better player at this point, and she’s had some of her best success in this very tournament, which includes her only singles title. I like Puig to get the victory here.
