Caroline Garcia and Mirjana Lucic-Baroni meet Saturday in the Final of the 2016 Strasbourg Open.
Caroline Garcia is coming off a three set victory over Virginie Razzano that took 35 games to decide. Garcia is playing some of her best singles tennis in a while and has now won five of her last seven matches. Garcia showed great fight in her last match after dropping the first set in the a tiebreak, and she should be well rested after playing just three sets since the quarterfinals. Garcia has now split her last 12 singles matches on clay court. This is Garcia’s fourth career final appearance and first since the 2015 Monterrey Open. Garcia looks for her second career title and first since the 2014 Copa Colsanitas.
USA TODAY Sports
Mirjana Lucic-Baroni is coming off a straight sets win over Kristina Mladenovic that took 14 games to decide. Lucic-Baroni has now lost just three games in her last two matches and has won six straight when you include her qualifying. Lucic-Baroni has really come out of nowhere this tournament as she hasn’t had any real success since the 90s when she made the semifinals of the Wimbledon and was once a top-30 player. At 34, Lucic-Baroni has found her form recently and is downright dominating this tournament. This is Lucic-Baroni’s first final appearance since the 2014 Tournoi de Québec, and she looks for her fifth career title. Lucic-Baroni is 3-1 in previous final appearances with her only loss coming in the 1997 Strasbourg Open.
This will be the first time these two meet on the tennis court.
Lucic-Baroni has lost just three games in her last two matches. Three. That’s peak Serena-like dominance. Garcia is the younger player, more athletic and all that jazz. But Lucic-Baroni is rolling as of late and probably could find a way to win this match due to her experience.
I have to go with Lucic-Baroni with the way she’s played her last two matches.
