the Line: -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds

Rafael Nadal and Sam Groth square off in the first round of the 2016 French Open.

Rafael Nadal enters this tournament in terrific form after winning 15 of his last 17 matches. Nadal has made three final appearances already this season and is coming off titles at the Monte-Carlo Masters and Barcelona Open. It wasn’t that long ago when people were questioning if Nadal still had what it took to be an elite player, but he’s clearly proving critics wrong. Nadal is currently as scary as ever entertaining the grand slam he’s owned throughout his career. Nadal has lost in the first round of a grand slam twice since 2013. Nadal has never lost in the first round of the French Open.

Rafael Nadal vs. Sam Groth 2016 French Open Pick, Odds, Prediction

Sam Groth enters this tournament with losses in five of his last seven singles matches. And while that may seem like poor form, Groth has been forced to retire from his last two matches that he was winning due to a blocked nerve in his neck. Groth has been dealing with the issue for about a month now, and it causes pain in his arm as well. Of course, Groth had to have foot surgery last season due to another nerve issue. When healthy, we’ve seen what Groth is capable of doing as he’s a potential top-50 player when in solid form. Groth has made it out of the first round of a grand slam in five of his last six appearances. This is only Groth’s second career appearance in the French Open.

This will be the first time these two meet on the tennis court.

Groth isn’t an easy first round opponent when he’s healthy. However, he’s not and has missed a lot of playing time due to his injury.

Assuming they play and when you add Nadal’s current form, he should be able to win this in three sets.
