Stan Wawrinka and Jeremy Chardy square off in the third round of the 2016 French Open.
Stan Wawrinka is coming off a straight sets win over Taro Daniel that took 32 games to decide. In the victory, Wawrinka won 81 percent of his first serve points and 62 percent of his second serve points. Wawrinka played much better than he did in his first round match, as he finished points quicker and hit 62 winners in just three sets. Wawrinka is most effective when he’s hitting his spots, and he had just 56 winners in his opening match in five sets. When pushing the issue offensively, Wawrinka is very tough to beat. Wawrinka has made at least the fourth round in his last seven grand slam appearances.

Jeremy Chardy is coming off a straight sets win over Adam Pavlasek that took 28 games to decide. In the victory, Chardy won 89 percent of his first serve points and 73 percent of his second serve points. Chardy improved his in play first serve percentage (67 percent) by 10 percent from his first match and continues to dominate his first serve points overall. If Chardy can continue to drop down aces and avoid a second serve, he’ll have a shot to make the fourth round of the French Open in back-to-back seasons. Chardy has beaten just three top-10 players since 2013. Chardy has reached the fourth round of a grand slam four times since 2013.
These two have met four times in the past, and Wawrinka has won each meeting, three of which in straight sets. The most recent match came in Hertogenbosch in 2013, a match Wawrinka won in 23 games. This will be the third time these two play on clay court.
Wawrinka has the big head to head advantage over Chardy even though they haven’t played recently, and he’s simply the better player overall in their current forms. If Wawrinka continues to be aggressive with his offense like he was in the second round, he’ll win this in three sets.
Either way, Wawrinka advances to another fourth round.
