Serena Williams and Garbine Muguruza meet Saturday in the 2016 French Open Final.
Serena Williams is coming off a straight sets win over Kiki Bertens that took 23 games to decide. In the victory, Serena won 62 percent of her first serve points and 48 percent of her second serve points. Serena has still dropped just one set this tournament and will now play her fourth match in as many days. Serena doesn’t seem to be bothered much by the changed schedule, as she’s produced 73 winners in her last two matches. The one concern is Serena has 31 or more unforced errors in three of her last four matches, a number that must be trimmed in order to make her victories a little less taxing. Serena hopes to win her 22nd career grand slam title. A win here would give Serena her fourth career French Open title.

Garbine Muguruza is coming off a straight sets win over Samantha Stosur that took 18 games to decide. In the victory, Muguruza won 79 percent of her first serve points and 48 percent of her second serve points. Muguruza hasn’t dropped a set in five straight matches and has played a combined 39 games in her last two matches. Fatigue and workload is clearly on Muguruza’s side as she’s had a couple of days off between matches. Muguruza has won no less than 71 percent of her first serve points and has produced 41 winners in her last two matches. Muguruza has been steamrolling ever since her shaky first round match against Anna Karolina Schmiedlova. Muguruza has a chance to win her first career grand slam title. This is Muguruza’s second career grand slam final appearance and first since the 2015 WImbledon.
These two have met four times in the past and Serena has won three of those meetings. The most recent match was in the 2015 Wimbledon, a match Serena won in 20 games. Muguruza’s only win over Serena came in the 2014 French Open. Three of the four matches have been decided in straight sets and this will be the second match on clay.
Serena has had a couple of chances to get grand slam title 22, and this seems like her best shot. Not to take away anything from Muguruza, as she’s playing fabolous tennis, but all of the top players dropping like flies kind of cleared the path for the No. 1 player in the world.
Muguruza is more than capable of stealing this match, especially in her current form. However, it’s unlikely Serena is going to fall short three straight tournaments.
Serena finally gets No. 22.
