Anderson vs. Wawrinka
The Line -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds
Stan Wawrinka and Kevin Anderson square off in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Rogers Cup.
Stan Wawrinka is coming off a straight sets win over Jack Sock and has won three tiebreaks this tournament. Wawrinka has looked sharp in his first two matches since his early Wimbledon exit, and he’s making the shots when he needs to most. Wawrinka is doing a solid job with his serve and is being his usual self in terms of aggressiveness with his winners. When Wawrinka isn’t piling up the unforced errors, he’s easily one of the toughest players on tour to beat. Wawrinka has won five of his last seven quarterfinal appearances. Wawrinka has won nine of his last 11 matches on hard court.
USA TODAY Sports
Kevin Anderson is coming off a three set win over Bernard Tomic and has played just six sets in his last three matches. Anderson was able to benefit from the retirement of Dominic Thiem and heads into this match quite rested and ready to get over the hump. Anderson has dropped off quite a bit due to knee and shoulder injuries, but he’s looked good in this tournament so far and has a chance for his best showing of the 2016 season. Anderson has lost six straight quarterfinal appearances. Anderson hasn’t won a quarterfinal match since 2015 in Winston-Salem. Anderson has split his last 12 matches on hard court.
These two have split their previous eight meetings with the most recent match coming in the 2015 US Open, a match Wawrinka won in straight sets. However, Anderson has beaten Wawrinka in four of the last five meetings.
Anderson is having a solid showing and it’s nice to see him back in the quarters of a big tournament. However, beating Wawrinka is a whole different task for a guy who is still trying to find his footing. Head to head gives Anderson an advantage but when both guys are at the top of their game, Wawrinka should win in a landslide.
Give me Wawrinka in straight sets.
