Novak Djokovic and Juan Martin Del Potro meet in the first round of the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics.
Novak Djokovic is fresh off a title at the Canadian Masters and now looks to add a gold medal to his resume. Djokovic looks healthy and in great form, as he’s won 17 of his last 20 sets. Djokovic is the clear frontrunner to win this tournament and should be highly motivated after settling for the bronze medal matches in his last two summer olympics appearances. As long as Djokovic plays within himself and doesn’t rack up a ton of unforced errors, he should be in good shape this event. Djokovic has not lost a match on hard surface since Dubai of this season.

Juan Martin Del Potro has not played a match since losing in the third round of the Wimbledon against Lucas Pouille. Del Potro is making his second olympic appearance after winning the bronze medal back in 2012. Del Potro hasn’t had a lot of recent matches under his belt and has really struggled to find his form in singles play. The one thing saving Del Potro is that he is experienced and has shown he can be dangerous when hitting his spots. Del Potro has just one win over a top-10 player since 2014. Del Potro has split his last 10 matches on hard court.
These two have met 14 times in the past and Djokovic has won 11 of those meetings. The most recent match was in the 2013 ATP World Tour Finals, a match Djokovic won in three sets. Djokovic has won seven of the last eight matches against Del Potro.
I’ve said it time and time again, don’t bet against Djokovic. Del Potro isn’t going to go from not playing much to beating Djokovic on this stage.
Give me Djokovic in straight sets.
