Gavrilova vs. Serena
The Line: -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds
Serena Williams and Daria Gavrilova meet in the first round of the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics.
Serena Williams enters this event confident and in great form after winning the singles and doubles title at the Wimbledon. Serena is also no stranger to olympic success after winning the gold medal in 2012 and bringing home three gold medals in doubles play. Serena has been very consistent ever since winning the Rome Masters title, and she’ll be focused for this event considering it may be her last olympics appearance considering she’s 34 years old. As long as Serena doesn’t get in her head too much, she’ll be the overwhelming favorite to win gold yet again. Serena has won 12 of her last 15 matches on hard court.
USA TODAY Sports
Daria Gavrilova is coming off a second round exit in the Canadian Masters and hopes to find her form quickly after being hit or miss the last several tournaments. Gavrilova has had a breakthrough season this year and has been consistently a top-50 player with three wins over top-10 players. Gavrilova also has some olympic success after winning gold in the 2010 youth olympics. However, Gavrilova has hit a bit of a rough patch recently and really hasn’t looked great since reaching the quarterfinals of the Madrid Masters. Even then, Gavrilova has six wins over top-10 players for her career, so she can’t be underestimated. Gavrilova has lost seven of her last 11 matches on hard court.
These two have played once in the past, which was in the 2013 Qatar Total Open, a match Serena won in 15 games. This is obviously the second meeting on hard court.
This match will last 16 or less games if the Serena who was in Wimbledon shows up for this event. Considering this is likely Serena's last olympic appearance, you better believe she’s going for the gold. There’s not much Gavrilova can do to stop this freight train.
Give me Serena in straight sets.
