August 2016

the Line -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds

Angelique Kerber and Mariana Duque-Marino meet in the first round of the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics.

Angelique Kerber is coming off a semifinals appearance at the Canadian Masters and hopes to build on her quarterfinals appearance in the 2012 olympics. Kerber has been very consistent this season overall with four finals appearances, which includes winning the Australian Open. Kerber has remained the second best player in the world since February and hopes to represent Germany proud when she takes the court for her second olympic showing. Kerber has a shot to beat anybody when she’s keeping her unforced errors to a minimum. Kerber has won eight of her last 12 matches on hard court.

Angelique Kerber vs. Mariana Duque-Marino 2016 Rio Summer Olympics Pick, Odds, Prediction

Mariana Duque-Marino hopes she can find her form as she’s split her last 10 matches when you include qualifying. Duque-Marino has been hit or miss all season long but did reach the Nürnberger Versicherungscup Final back in May, which was her first and only final appearance since 2010. Duque-Marino doesn’t have any olympic success and hasn’t fared well against top-10 players in her career, but she did win gold in the 2015 Pan American Games, so she’s shown she can compete in big events. Duque-Marino has to get off to a fast start in order to gain confidence and have any sort of real shot to pull off the upset. Duque-Marino has lost six her last eight matches on hard court.

These two have met once in the past, which was in the 2010 Copa Colsanitas, a match Duque-Marino won in straight sets. This will be the first match on hard court.

Duque-Marino has been lousy on hard court for quite some time and has shown us nothing recently that makes us think she can beat Kerber, a top-five player in the world. Look for Kerber to hit her spots and overpower Columbian.

Give me Kerber in straight sets.
