the Line -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds

David Ferrer and Denis Istomin meet in the first round of the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics.

David Ferrer has had plenty of time off to prepare for this tournament after not playing since his second round exit in the Wimbledon. Ferrer has needed to clear his head and recharge the batteries after losing four of his last six matches overall. When in good form, Ferrer is one of the harder workers in the sport and usually wears down his opponent with terrific stamina and above-average defense. This will be Ferrer’s third olympic appearance and quite possibly his last considering he’s already 34 years old. Ferrer has won eight of his last 12 matches on hard court.

David Ferrer vs. Denis Istomin 2016 Rio Summer Olympics Pick, Odds, Prediction

Denis Istomin is coming off a semifinals appearance in the Astana Challenger and hopes to build on that success by being a surprise in these olympics. After all, Istomin reached the third round of the 2012 olympics, which was easily his breakout season when he was once a top-40 player. Now, Istomin is just trying to keep his head above water, as he’s really struggled in ATP play and his performance in Kazakhstan may be the highlight of his 2016 season to this point. An upset win here would be a huge success for the 29-year-old Istomin. Istomin has won five of his last eight matches on hard court.

These two have met four times in the past and Ferrer has won three of those meetings. The most recent match was in this year's Geneva Open, a match Ferrer won in straight sets. Istomin’s only win over Ferrer came in the 2012 Indian Wells Masters.

If there’s any top-15 player capable of getting upset in the first round, it’s Ferrer. He hasn’t looked good at all the last few tournaments. However, the time off should help him and allow him to get back to being the workhorse he usually is.

I’ll take Ferrer to win this match probably in straight sets.
