Groth vs. Goffin
The Line -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds
David Goffin and Sam Groth meet in the first round of the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics.
David Goffin enters this tournament in consistent form and has been a top-15 player all year long. Goffin has picked up two of his three victories over top-10 players this season and has improved his play in grand slams as of late. Given the improvements in big matches, one would think Goffin is ready to compete in his second olympic appearance. Back in 2012, Goffin was just 21 years old and was sent home in the first round by Feliciano López. Goffin has a chance to represent Belgium quite well in this tournament if he can continue to spray winners across the court. Goffin has won 11 of his last 15 matches on hard court.
USA TODAY Sports
Sam Groth was a late call up for the olympics and hopes this event can turn things around as he’s lost his last four matches. Groth is in downright brutal form right now, as he’s lost 12 of his last 18 matches and has dropped out of the top-100. It wasn’t that long ago when Groth was a top-60 player and competing for titles. Now, Groth has lost nine of his last 11 sets, isn’t holding serve at all and can’t be too confident despite the recent call up. Groth is still young enough to figure it out and has shown how good he can be when everything is clicking, but it’s hard to expect much given what we’ve seen over the last several weeks. Groth has lost eight of his last 10 matches on hard court.
This will be the first time these two meet on the tennis court.
Goffin has a chance to push the rest of the field for a possible medal, while Groth is lucky to be here in the first place and has provided no signs of turning things around. This match could be quick and painless.
Give me Goffin in straight sets.
