The Line -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds
Serena Williams and Alize Cornet meet in the second round of the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics.
Serena Williams is coming off a straight sets win over Daria Gavrilova that took 18 games to decide. Serena continues her dominance, as she’s now won eight straight matches and 14 straight sets overall. When Serena is hitting the ball this well and playing with this much confidence, there’s not many women on tour who can even steal a set from her. Serena is super focused and doing a great job of finishing points quickly and playing clean tennis overall. Serena is in good shape as long as she doesn’t run into a mountain of unforced errors. Serena has won 12 of her last 15 matches on hard court.

Alize Cornet is coming off a three set victory over Johanna Larsson that took 24 games to decide. Cornet came into this tournament losing three of her last four matches and not really looking sharp since winning the Hobart International back in January. However, Cornet just made light work of a top-60 player and lost just a combined four games in the two sets she won. Cornet is no stranger to big matches and had a ton of success against elite players back in 2014. If Cornet can find consistent form and serve well, she’s a dangerous second round opponent for the top player in the world. Cornet has nine career victories over top-10 players. Cornet has split her last 10 matches on hard court.
These two have met six times in the past and the contests have been split down the middle. In fact, Cornet has beaten Serena in three straight meetings with the most recent match coming in the 2014 Wuhan Open. Serena’s last win over Cornet came in the 2014 Brisbane Invitational.
Cornet will have confidence given the head to head history, but Serena is in her groove right now and one of the few players who is unbeatable when hitting the ball well.
Give me Serena in straight sets.
