Kerber vs. Keys
The Line -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds
Madison Keys and Angelique Kerber meet in the semifinals of the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics.
Madison Keys is coming off a straight sets victory over Daria Kasatkina that took 16 games to decide. Keys is coming off her best played match yet and continues to show she’s developing that killer instinct by finishing points quickly and making far less unforced errors that kept previous opponents in matches. Keys is hitting the ball with confidence and letting her controlled power takeover the game. Keys has instantly shot up the rankings and is quickly becoming one of the faces of American tennis with Serena Williams getting older. A win here and Keys will have a chance to become the sixth different American woman to win gold. Keys has won 12 of her last 14 matches on hard court.
USA TODAY Sports
Angelique Kerber is coming off a straight sets win over Johanna Konta that took 15 games to decide. Kerber has yet to drop a set this tournament and has lost just eight games in her last two matches overall. Kerber has really been a more consistent player since winning the Australian Open earlier in the year, and she’s a more confident player who knows she belongs on the big stage. However, this will be one of Kerber’s biggest matches of her career despite her success. A victory here, and Kerber guarantees herself an olympic medal, joining Dorothea Köring and Steffi Graf as the only German women to do so in singles play. Kerber has won 11 of her last 13 matches on hard court.
These two have met five times in the past and Kerber has won four of those meetings. The most recent match was in this year's Miami Masters, a match Kerber won in 17 games. Keys only win over Kerber came in the 2014 Eastbourne International.
The same reason I picked Puig to win the other semifinals match is the reason why I’m siding with Keys. I just can’t bet against the momentum of both players. Especially, Keys, who has quickly found the formula for consistent play and continues to overwhelm her opponent with her power game.
It looks like it’s Keys’ time to shine.
I like the American to advance to the final.
