Stan Wawrinka is coming off a four set win over Illya Marchenko that took 39 games to decide. In the victory, Wawrinka won 73 percent of his first serve points and 57 percent of his second serve points. Wawrinka needed a quick victory after his marathon third round match and now heads into the quarterfinals with great confidence. When Wawrinka is patient and not racking up the unforced errors, he has proven he can beat anybody on any given day. Wawrinka looks for his fifth grand slam semifinal in his last eight tries. Wawrinka looks for his third career US Open semifinal appearance. Wawrinka has won eight of his last 10 matches on hard court.
These two have played six times in the past and Del Potro has won four of those meetings. The most recent match was in this year's Wimbledon, a match Del Potro won in four sets. Wawrinka’s last win over Del Potro came in the 2008 Wimbledon. This will be the first match on hard court.
The fact these two have never met on hard court is very telling, as Wawrinka plays his best tennis on the surface and it helps his power & shotmaking. Del Potro has been playing great, great tennis over the last month, but Wawrinka has the advantage on this surface. His shotmaking and speed of the court will be the difference here.
This match is likely going to be quite long, but Wawrinka should come out with the victory.
