Osaka vs. Shvedova

October 2016

The Line: Osaka +115 / Shvedova -135 -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds

Yaroslava Shvedova and Naomi Osaka meet Tuesday in the first round of the 2016 Tianjin Open.

Yaroslava Shvedova is coming off a quarterfinal appearance at the China Open in which she lost to Agnieszka Radwańska in straight sets. Before that, Shvedova was cruising in the tournament which included an upset over Carla Suarez Navarro in her opening match. Shvedova has had a very successful season overall that includes a quarterfinal appearance at the Wimbledon and a ton of deep runs in the WTA Premier Mandatory Tournaments. Shvedova has won 16 of her last 22 sets played and well continue to be a dangerous player as long as her service game holds up. Shvedova needs to get off to a fast start and keep her confidence going. Shvedova has won eight of her last 11 matches on hard court.

Yaroslava Shvedova vs. Naomi Osaka 2016 Tianjin Open Pick, Odds, Prediction

Naomi Osaka is coming off a frustrating straight sets loss against Tatjana Maria in the China Open. Osaka should still be feeling food after making the finals in Tokyo and becoming a top-50 player for the first time in her young career. This has been the season where the 18-year-old Osaka has put the tennis world on notice and convinced most that she may be the most promising player who is under 20 years old. Osaka has the power and shotmaking to beat anybody on any given day. It’s just a matter of experience and controlling her young nerves that are preventing Osaka from really taking that next step considering this is her first full season on the WTA tour. Osaka has won five of her last eight matches on hard court.

These two have met once in the past, which was in the 2015 Hua Hin Championships, a match Shvedova won in three sets. The match took 33 games to decide.

The match between these two last year came down to the wire, and it’s fair to say Osaka is better and more experienced than she was back then. Most know I’m a huge fan of Osaka’s game, as I even have her winning a grand slam within the next two years. She’s the real deal and will only improve with more matches under her belt. So, with that said, I’m going to take her whenever I can, especially when getting plus money. Shvedova has played great all year, but she’s more than beatable and will struggle with the power shots of Osaka.

Give me Osaka to win this match.
