Kuznetsova vs. Osaka
The Line: Kuznetsova -230 / Osaka +190 -- Over/Under: 20.5 See the Latest Odds
Naomi Osaka and Svetlana Kuznetsova meet Friday in the quarterfinals of the 2016 Tianjin Open.
Naomi Osaka is coming off a straight sets win over Lucie Hradecka that took 21 games to decide. In the victory, Osaka won 75 percent of her first serve points and 70 percent of her second serve points. Osaka continues to build her momentum after a strong showing at the US Open and just making the final in Tokyo. Osaka is close to being a top-40 player in the world for the first time of her young career and will turn 19 years old in a few days. A shot at a title would certainly be a nice birthday present and help put tennis fans on notice even more with the rising Japanese star. Osaka can compete with anybody as long as she continues to serve at a high percentage. Osaka has won six of her last eight matches on hard court.
USA TODAY Sports
Svetlana Kuznetsova is coming off a straight sets win over Donna Vekic that took 22 games to decide. In the victory, Kuznetsova won 70 percent of her first serve points and 53 percent of her second serve points. Kuznetsova is putting together a nice finish to her season, as she’s won seven of her last 11 sets and has made the quarterfinals for the third time in her last five events. Seven of Kuznetsova’s last eight victories have been decided in straight sets and she’s proving she can still be a force at 31 years old. The only concern with Kuznetsova is her second serve, as she must be more effective if she hopes to advance to the semifinals. Kuznetsova has won seven of her last nine matches on hard court.
This will be the first time these two have met on the tennis court.
Anybody who has been following my picks knows I have tons of stock in the young Osaka and back her whenever I can, especially when the lines are sweet. For example, we backed Osaka as an underdog against Yaroslava Shvedova, and that was a quick straight sets victory. Osaka is the real deal and will be competing for grand slams once she gets more experience under her belt. I like Osaka in this match as well due to Kuznetsova and her weak second serve. Osaka eats up subpar serves with winners across the court. Not to mention Osaka’s birthday is just days away, so she’ll want a good showing, and she’ll be the crowd favorite here.
Give me Osaka to beat a top-10 player.
