Monfils vs. Raonic

November 13, 2016

The Line: Raonic -130 / Monfils +110 --- Over/Under See the Latest Odds

Milos Raonic and Gael Monfils meet in the first match of the 2016 ATP World Tour Finals.

Milos Raonic has split his last eight matches and is coming off a semifinals appearance at the Paris Masters. The concern for Raonic in this tournament is that he is suffering from a torn right quad, which forced him to withdraw from his semifinal match against Andy Murray. It’ll be interesting to see if Raonic is able to hold up, and if he can’t, Tomas Berdych will get the nod as his replacement. When healthy, it’s no secret Raonic is one of the better servers in the game, and his return has improved as well over the years. Regardless, Raonic will be tested early and often due to the athleticism of his opponent. Raonic has split his last six matches on indoor hard court.

Milos Raonic vs. Gael Monfils 2016 ATP World Tour Finals Pick, Odds, Prediction

Gael Monfils enters this tournament on a two-match losing streak but has had his most successful season of his career. Monfils is 43-15 this season and that includes reaching three finals while winning the Washington Open in July. Monfils has focused more on winning points rather than just pleasing the crowd, and it’s paid off in a big way. Monfils is no longer throwing sets and matches away and has become a far more consistent player who is easier to trust in big matches. This is Monfils’ first appearance in the ATP Finals, and you know the 30-year-old Frenchman will be eager to prove he can play with the best in the world on the big stage. This is a big opportunity for Monfils. Monfils has split his last eight matches on indoor hard court.

These two have played five times in the past and Monfils has won three of those meetings. The most recent match was in this years Canadian Masters, a match Monfils won in straight sets. Raonic has won two of the last three matches against Monfils and all of those matches took place this season.

I’m not sure how Raonic can be the favorite given his injury, but even if he was healthy, I’m backing Monfils in this match. Monfils has been more consistent overall this season and this tournament likely means the world to him given how he’s turned things around. When you add in a torn quad for Raonic, Monfils should be a huge favorite given his playing style.

Give me Monfils in this match.
