Andy Murray and Marin Cilic meet in the first match of the 2016 ATP World Tour Finals.
Andy Murray enters this tournament as the top ranked player for the first time in his career and hopes to make a deep run in the ATP Finals for the first time since 2012. Murray is the favorite to win the ATP FInals, as he’s won 20 straight matches and is easily experiencing the best season of his successful career. Murray is serving well, playing elite level defense and is able to dig deep and find ways to win the most important points in a match. The only thing that could slow Murray down at this point is fatigue considering he’s played 22 matches since the US Open. Still, Murray is in another zone than the other players at this very moment. Murray has won 10 straight matches on indoor hard court.
USA TODAY Sports
Marin Cilic is coming off a semifinal appearance at the Paris Masters and is playing in his second career ATP Finals. Cilic has won 12 of his last 15 matches and is back to serving at a very high percentage. Cilic is always winning at least 70 percent of his first serve points and has produced a combined 21 aces in his last three matches. When Cilic is getting free points and taking advantage of his power game, he’s proven he’s one of the tougher players in the field to beat. Cilic has six wins over top-10 players this season, which is the most in any season throughout his career. Also, 21 of Cilic’s 25 career wins over top-10 players have come on hard court. Cilic has won eight of his last nine matches on indoor hard court.
These two have played 14 times in the past and Murray has won 11 of those matches. The most recent match was in this years Cincinnati Masters, a match Cilic won in straight sets. Murray has won nine of his last 11 matches against Cilic.
Cilic does have some recent success against Murray, but if you’ve been reading my articles for a while now, you’ll know I haven’t bet against Murray often this season. The guy is on another planet with his play and has a chance to finish the season with another strong statement to the rest of his competition. You just can’t bet against Murray in his current form.
Give me Murray for another victory.
