Caroline Wozniacki and Elina Svitolina meet Sunday in the final of the 2017 Rogers Cup.
Caroline Wozniacki is coming off a straight sets win over Sloane Stephens that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Wozniacki won 62 percent of her first serve points and 47 percent of her second serve points. Wozniacki has now won 10 of her last 14 sets and is coming off a match in which she won 59 percent of her total return points. Wozniacki has had a truckload of success with her return game in this tournament and is giving herself double-digit break chances in nearly all of her recent matches. As long as the defensive effort is there, Wozniacki has to like her chances to win her first title of the 2017 season. Wozniacki hopes to win her 26th career title and first since the 2016 Hong Kong Tennis Open. Wozniacki has lost her last five final appearances and is 20-15 in final appearances on hard court. Wozniacki has won nine of her last 10 matches on hard court.

Elina Svitolina is coming off a straight sets win over Simona Halep that took 14 games to decide. In the victory, Svitolina won 86 percent of her first serve points and 54 percent of her second serve points. Svitolina is coming off quite a semifinal match in which she won 59 percent of her return points and managed to beat two top-10 players in the same day. Svitolina is hitting her spots with confidence, spraying winners across the court and serving at a high percentage. Svitolina is on a mission to keep building on what has already been her breakout season. The obvious question with Svitolina is how much she has left in the tank after playing two matches on Saturday. Svitolina hopes to win her fifth title of the season and her ninth title of her career. Svitolina has won her last four final appearances and is 5-2 in final appearances on hard court. Svitolina has won six of her last eight matches on hard court.
These two have played twice and Svitolina has won both meetings. The most recent match was in this years Dubai Tennis Championships, a match Svitolina won in straight sets. The other match was in the 2016 Miami Masters, which was decided in three sets.
Some may find it hard to bet against Svitolina with the way she played both matches Saturday and the fact Wozniacki has built a recent reputation of being a choker in final appearances. However, conditioning and fatigue isn’t on Svitolina’s side. Even with her semifinal match being quick and painless, it’s not easy to bounce back after playing four sets in one day. This is a quick turnaround that will really test the 22-year-old. Wozniacki has the advantage here and that’s enough for me to pick her in this spot.
It won’t be easy, but rest is on Wozniacki’s side, which is key in a match that could be tight.
