The Line: -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds
Maria Sharapova and Anastasija Sevastova meet in the fourth round of the 2017 US Open.
Maria Sharapova is coming off a straight sets win over Sofia Kenin that took 20 games to decide. In the victory, Sharapova won 72 percent of her first serve points and 42 percent of her second serve points. Sharapova is coming off a match in which she won 53 percent of her return points and combined for 77 winners in her last two matches. Sharapova still has issues now and then with her serve, but you can slowly see her finding her rhythm, and she’s hitting the ball with great pace and confidence. Sharapova looks for her fifth grand slam quarterfinal since 2014. Sharapova hopes for her first US Open quarterfinal since 2012. Sharapova has won four of her last five matches on hard court.
USA TODAY Sports
Anastasija Sevastova is coming off a straight sets win over Donna Vekic that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Sevastova won 57 percent of her first serve points and 61 percent of her second serve points. Sevastova has yet to drop a set this tournament and is coming off a match in which she won 57 percent of her return points. Sevastova has been deadly on the return this tournament, and it’s given her a combined 39 break chances in her first three matches. If those numbers continue, Sevastova has a chance to win this match. Sevastova looks to reach her second career grand slam quarterfinal. Of course, Sevastova made the quarterfinal of the US Open last season. Sevastova has won five of her last six matches on hard court.
This will be the first time these two meet on the tennis court.
This is a match Sevastova can win if she continues to be aggressive and win a high percentage of her return points. However, Sharapova has been sharp on the big stage and you can see her confidence building with each set that passes. I’m not sure how much she has left in the tank given her lack of matches this year, but she should have enough to get past this match.
I’ll side with Sharapova due to her form and the way she’s spraying winners left and right.
