Roger Federer and Juan Martin Del Potro meet in the quarterfinals of the 2017 US Open.

Roger Federer is coming off a straight sets win over Philipp Kohlschreiber that took 30 games to decide. In the victory, Federer won 88 percent of his first serve points and 73 percent of his second serve points. Federer seems to be getting better the deeper in the tournament we go, and he’s coming off a match in which he dropped just six of 49 first serve points. Everybody knows about Federer’s return ability, but if he’s going to be unbreakable, he has to love his chances of winning another grand slam title. Federer hopes to make his seventh straight grand slam semifinal. Federer has lost in one grand slam quarterfinal since 2014, which was in the 2015 French Open. Federer has won eight of his last nine matches on hard court.

Roger Federer vs. Juan Martin Del Potro 2017 US Open Quarterfinal Pick, Odds, Prediction

USA TODAY Sports

Juan Martin Del Potro is coming off a five sets win over Dominic Thiem that took 45 games to decide. In the victory, Del Potro won 64 percent of his first serve points and 57 percent of his second serve points. Del Potro looked dead in the first two sets in which he won just three games and couldn’t get anything going. But then Del Potro began playing out of his mind and ended up giving himself 16 break points and thriving off the crowd. We know Del Potro has it in him to beat anybody any given day, but now you have to question just how much he has left in those legs after such an emotional match and just one day of rest in-between. Del Potro hopes to make his fourth career grand slam semifinal and first since the 2013 Wimbledon. Del Potro has won six of his last seven matches on hard court.

These two have played 21 times and Federer has won 16 of those meetings. The most recent match was in this years Miami Masters, a match Federer won in straight sets. Del Potro’s last win over Federer came in the 2013 Basel Open.

This draw has been very kind to Federer, as he’s getting guys he’s dominated over the years. Granted, Federer has had little issues with anybody in his career, but his head to head numbers against his recent competition are ugly. Del Potro is sure to be gassed after making an incredible comeback, and dead legs won’t allow him to beat somebody he’s lost to time and time again.

Federer rolls in likely straight sets.
