Sloane Stephens and Venus Williams meet in the semifinals of the 2017 US Open.

Sloane Stephens is coming off a three sets win over Anastasija Sevastova that took 31 games to decide. In the victory, Stephens won 64 percent of her first serve points and 40 percent of her second serve points. Stephens showed terrific fight in her quartefinal match after being broken twice, and she managed to win 66 percent of her net points. Stephens has done a wonderful job of winning the big points this tournament and has combined for 58 winners in her last three matches. However, Stephens has dropped the second set in three of her last four matches, which indicates a dip in her game, something you’d like to see fixed. Stephens is in her first grand slam semifinal since the 2013 Australian Open and hopes to make her first grand slam final appearance. Stephens has won 10 of her last 12 matches on hard court.

Sloane Stephens vs. Venus Williams 2017 US Open Semifinal Pick, Odds, Prediction

USA TODAY Sports

Venus Williams is coming off a three sets win over Petra Kvitova that took 31 games to decide. In the victory, Venus won 67 percent of her first serve points and 61 percent of her second serve points. Venus was able to rally behind an Amercian crowd and found a way in the third set despite looking like it may not be her night, and she won 40 percent of her return points, which was key. Venus continues to come away with the big points and has this pitbull mentality that won’t allow her to go down without a fight. Even Venus isn’t playing her best tennis, she finds a way to dig deep and wait for her opponent to create the opening that changes the match. Venus hopes to make her third grand slam final of the season and her first US Open final appearance since 2002. Venus has won eight of her last 10 matches on hard court.

These two have played once, which was in the 2015 French Open, a match Stephens won in straight sets. The match took 20 games to decide.

Stephens is probably the fresher of the two and is the better mover, which could be key. However, experience matters in these type of matches, and that’s where Venus has a considerable edge. When the match gets tough and the crowd is buzzing, it’s Venus who will be better at controlling her nerves. Also, Venus has the edge in power, where as Stephens hasn’t shown she’s able to hit through her opponent.

This is going to be a fun match where the crowd can’t lose either way, but you have to give Venus the advantage.
