The Line: -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds
Jelena Ostapenko and Garbine Muguruza meet in the quarterfinals of the 2017 Wuhan Open.
Jelena Ostapenko is coming off a three sets win over Monica Puig that took 26 games to decide. In the victory, Ostapenko won 76 percent of her first serve points and 49 percent of her second serve points. Ostapenko won an up-and-down three set match, but she can clean her game up quite a bit moving forward. Ostapenko was downright awful with her second serve in her victory over Puig, and she had 10 double faults. While Ostapenko is still finding ways to win when not playing her best, that will no longer be the case with the competition increasing the deeper she gets in the tournament. Ostapenko has won five of her last seven quarterfinal matches and hopes to reach her sixth semifinal of the season. Ostapenko has won seven straight matches on hard court.

Garbine Muguruza is coming off a three sets win over Magda Linette that took 25 games to decide. In the victory, Muguruza won 64 percent of her first serve points and 54 percent of her second serve points. Muguruza didn’t look her best in the victory, but she managed to fight her way through the third set and ended up winning 45 percent of her return points overall. Still, Muguruza looked a bit sluggish at times and you have to wonder if all of these matches this season are finally catching up to her, as she’s experienced a heavy workload. Either way, Muguruza has managed to hit winners when needed most and finds ways to push through more times than not. Muguruza has won six of her last seven quarterfinal matches and hopes to reach her eighth semifinal of the season Muguruza has won 10 of her last 12 matches on hard court.
These two have played twice and Muguruza has won both matches. The most recent match was in this years Rome Masters, a match she won in three sets. The other match was in the 2016 Rome Masters. Obviously this is their first meeting on hard court.
I want to pick Ostapenko in this match, but I can’t based on how she served in her last match. Her second serve was downright pathetic and is something Muguruza will feast on when given the chance. Muguruza hasn’t played her best, but she digs deep and still has that fire to find a way to victory. When push comes to shove, Muguruza will do just enough to get the victory.
Don’t love this matchup, but Muguruza should reach the semifinals.
