Navarro vs. Venus

TV:

Venus Williams and Carla Suarez Navarro meet in the quarterfinals of the 2018 Indian Wells Masters.

Venus Williams is coming off a straight sets win over Anastasija Sevastova that took 23 games to decide. In the victory, Venus won 70 percent of her first serve points and 75 percent of her second serve points. Venus has yet to drop a set this tournament and is coming off a match in which she dominated her service game, getting 70 percent of her first serves in play. Venus didn’t get off to the strongest start this season, but maybe her recent win over her sister Serena Williams kind of calmed her down and got her back into her zone. If Venus can serve the way she did in the fourth round, she’s a very strong candidate to win this tournament, as inconsistent serving has been her biggest hiccup in her losses over the years. Venus has split her last six matches on hard court.

Venus Williams vs. Carla Suarez Navarro 2018 Indian Wells Masters Tennis Pick, Odds, Prediction

USA TODAY Sports

Carla Suarez Navarro is coming off a straight sets win over Danielle Collins that took 18 games to decide. In the victory, Navarro won 60 percent of her first serve points and 42 percent of her second serve points. Navarro has won each of her last five sets and is coming off a match in which she won 59 percent of her return points. Navarro has had issues with her second serve this tournament, but she’s given herself 28 break chances in her last three matches, which is a strong recipe for a victory. Navarro has been hit or miss in her last several tournaments, but her aggressive return gives her a fighting chance in this match. Navarro has 25 career wins over top-10 players, and five of those victories have come since the 2016 season. Navarro has won five of her last seven matches on hard court.

These two have played eight times and Venus has won five of those meetings. The most recent match was in the 2017 US Open, a match Venus won in three sets. Venus has won three straight matches against Navarro, and her last loss came in the 2015 Miami Masters. Three of the last five meetings have gone the distance.

It’s been a while since Navarro has made a serious run in a big tournament, as you’d probably have to go back to her run in the Bucharest Open. Navarro has lost three of her last four quarterfinal matches. Venus has been serving lights out in her first three matches, and if that continues, she’s going to be tough to beat for anybody. Venus is also going to eat alive Navarro’s weak second serve.

These two have played tight matches in the past, but I like Venus to once again prevail.
