TV: Tennis

Venus Williams and Johanna Konta meet in the fourth round of the tennis 2018 Miami Open.

Venus Williams is coming off a three sets win over Kiki Bertens that took 33 games to decide. In the victory, Venus won 58 percent of her first serve points and 49 percent of her second serve points. Venus did her best to throwaway her third round match, as she lost the first set despite having a 4-0 lead, and she gave her opponent 19 break chances. Venus obviously has to play much better if she’s going to make a deeper run this tournament, but it’s also fair to ask just how much the 37-year-old has left in the tank after such a draining match in heat. Venus has to do better with her first serve in this match especially. Venus hopes to make her 13th career quarterfinal appearance in he Miami Open. Venus has won six of her last seven matches on hard court.

Venus Williams vs. Johanna Konta 2018 Miami Open Tennis Pick, Odds, Prediction

USA TODAY Sports

Johanna Konta is coming off a straight sets win over Elise Mertens that took 15 games to decide. In the victory, Konta won 74 percent of her first serve points and 73 percent of her second serve points. Konta has now dropped a combined 10 games in her last two matches and is fresh off a match in which she broke six times and lost just nine service points overall. Konta has been hit or miss to start the season, but she’s been serving out of her mind this tournament and clearly enjoys Miami, as she’s now 11-1 in her career in this tournament. Konta hopes to make the quarterfinals of the Miami Open in all three of her appearances. Konta has won five of her last eight matches on hard court.

These two have split their six meetings, with Venus winning the most recent match in the 2017 Wimbledon in straight sets. Konta has not won a match against Venus since the 2017 Miami Masters, but she is 3-1 against her on hard court. Three of the six matches have gone the distance.

It’s tough to trust Venus at her age to rebound on a quick turnaround after playing such a lengthy match under the brutal sun. Venus wasn’t sharp at all and there’s no reason to think things will improve less than 24 hours later. Not to mention Konta has owned this tournament the last three years and has dominated her first two matches.

I like Konta to get the victory here.
