Isner vs. Cilic
The Line: -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds
Marin Cilic and John Isner meet in the fourth round of the tennis 2018 Miami Open.
Marin Cilic is coming off a straight sets win over Vasek Pospisil that took 25 games to decide. In the victory, Cilic won 85 percent of his first serve points and 67 percent of his second serve points. Cilic is coming off a lengthy match in which he won 35 of 41 first serve points and wasn’t broken once, however, he did win just 36 percent of his return points. Cilic has had issues with his return in three of his last five matches, but as long as he’s serving the way he is, he’s going to be a tough out and puts a ton of pressure on his opponent to play perfect. Cilic hopes to make the quarterfinals of the Miami Open for the second time ever and first time since 2013. Cilic has made the quarters in four of his last six ATP Masters Series tournament appearances. Cilic has won nine of his last 11 matches on hard court.
USA TODAY Sports
John Isner is coming off a straight sets win over Mikhail Youzhny that took 19 games to decide. In the victory, Isner won 83 percent of his first serve points and 48 percent of his second serve points. Isner dropped just six first service points in his victory and was actually sharp with his return, winning 41 percent, which is extremely solid for the American who usually struggles. It’s now up to Isner to use that performance as a building block, as he’s been horrible to start the season and isn’t producing the way you’re used to seeing, as even his aces numbers have been down. Regardless, Isner hopes to make the quarterfinals of the Miami Open for the second time ever and first time since 2015. Isner has made the quarters in three of his last six ATP Masters Series tournament appearances. Isner has split his last six matches on hard court.
These two have played nine times and Cilic has won seven of those meetings. The most recent match was in the 2017 Queen's Club Championships, a match Cilic won in straight sets. Isner has won two of the last three meetings against Cilic, however, he is 0-4 against him on outdoor hard court.
Isner is always worth a look when getting plus money due to his monster serve and chance to beat anybody when he’s getting so many free points. The problem is Isner has lost seven of his last 10 matches, and most of those opponents weren’t on the same level as Cilic. I need to see Isner snap out of this funk before backing him against quality players.
Give me Cilic to win this match.
