TV: Tennis

Jelena Ostapenko and Danielle Collins meet in the semifinals of the tennis 2018 Miami Open.

Jelena Ostapenko is coming off a straight sets win over Elina Svitolina that took 26 games to decide. In the victory, Ostapenko won 67 percent of her first serve points and 38 percent of her second serve points. Ostapenko has yet to lose a set this tournament, and that includes having to win four tiebreaks. Ostapenko is coming off a match in which she won 51 percent of her return points and broke six times. Of course, Ostapenko has to be much sharper with her service game if she’s going to reach one of the bigger finals of her career. Ostapenko hopes to make her first final appearance since last years Korea Open and her first WTA Premier Mandatory final appearance. Ostapenko has split her last six semifinal appearances. Ostapenko has won five of her last six matches on hard court.

USA TODAY Sports

Danielle Collins is coming off a straight sets win over Venus Williams that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Collins won 66 percent of her first serve points and 53 percent of her second serve points. Collins is having the time of her life after coming back to beat Monica Puig and now beating a top-10 player in straight sets. Collins is playing calm tennis, making few unforced errors and hitting the ball with great pace, clearly not looking like someone new to the tour. It’s now going to be interesting to see how Collins handles everything that comes with beating such a quality player, as the 24-year-old has never been in this position before. Collins hopes to reach her first WTA final of her career. Collins has won her only other semifinal match, which was against Ajla Tomljanovic in Newport Beach. Collins has won 10 of her last 11 matches on hard court.

These two have never played on the tennis court.

Collins deserves respect and is worthy to be considered a betting option. However, you rarely see players who are new to the tour come on and compete for titles in big tournaments. A quarterfinal or a semifinal trip happens, but beating multiple top-10 players and reaching the final? Almost never. Ostapenko also won’t have the same amount of unforced errors as Venus and has the power to push Collins around.

I’ll back Ostapenko in this spot.
