TV: ESPN

Sloane Stephens and Jelena Ostapenko meet in the final of the tennis 2018 Miami Open.

Sloane Stephens is coming off a three sets win over Victoria Azarenka that took 24 games to decide. In the victory, Stephens won 49 percent of her first serve points and 52 percent of her second serve points. Stephens certainly didn’t play her best in her semifinal victory, but she won 55 percent of her return points and simply dominated the third set to get the victory, winning 12 of her last 13 games. Stephens really increases her level of play in the US and has to feel she’s never out of a match given her current form. Stephens looks to win her six career title and her fifth on hard court. Stephens has never lost a final appearance in her career and has a chance to win her first WTA Premier Mandatory. Stephens has won eight of her last 10 matches on hard court.

Sloane Stephens vs. Jelena Ostapenko 2018 Miami Open Tennis Pick, Preview, Odds, Prediction

USA TODAY Sports

Jelena Ostapenko is coming off a straight sets win over Danielle Collins that took 22 games to decide. In the victory, Ostapenko won 73 percent of her first serve points and 44 percent of her second serve points. Ostapenko didn’t play her best tennis in her semifinal victory, but she did win a crucial first set tiebreak and broke twice in the second set. Ostapenko has now won five tiebreaks in this tournament and while shaky at times, she clearly buckles down when needed and hits monster winners down the line. If Ostapenko can limit her unforced errors, she’s going to be tough to beat in this match and the rest of the season. Ostapenko looks to win her third career title and is 1-1 in final appearances on hard court. Ostapenko is 2-3 in final appearances in her career and has a chance to win her first WTA Premier Mandatory. Ostapenko hasn’t won a title since the 2017 Korea Open. Ostapenko has won six of her last seven matches on hard court.

This will be the first ever meeting between these two players.

You can make a strong case for either of these players, as they’ve both been shaky at times but come through in the big spots to close the deal. The reason I’m going with Stephens is because she’s been the more consistent player and makes far less unforced errors. In a battle between two girls who can crush winners and look to be aggressive, give me the player who doesn’t pile up the mistakes. Stephens has also been on a tear when playing in the United States, which dates back to the US Open. She’ll once again be the crowd favorite in Miami.

Stephens improves to 6-0 in final appearances.
