Julia Goerges and Anastasija Sevastova meet in the semifinals of the 2018 tennis Charleston Open.
Julia Goerges is coming off a straight sets win over Daria Kasatkina that took 19 games to decide. In the victory, Goerges won 84 percent of her first serve points and 50 percent of her second serve points. Goerges had little trouble in her quarterfinal match, as she won 73 percent of her total service points and was broken just once. Goerges has now hit 24 aces in this tournament and has a real shot to win this title if she can continue to serve the way she has up to this point. After beating back-to-back top-25 players, Goerges has to be riding high with confidence at the moment. Goerges hopes to reach her second final appearance of the year and the 13th of her career. Goerges has won six of her last seven semifinal appearances. Goerges has won seven of his last nine matches on clay court.
USA TODAY Sports
Anastasija Sevastova is coming off a straight sets win over Kristyna Pliskova that took 16 games to decide. In the victory, Sevastova won 77 percent of her first serve points and 67 percent of her second serve points. Sevastova cruised in her quarterfinal match, which included winning 73 percent of her service points and 47 percent of her return points. Sevastova has now dropped a combined 11 games in her last two matches, which is pure dominance and displaying just the type of form the soon to be 28-year-old is in currently. Sevastova has everything working right now and is covering a ton of ground with her defense. Sevastova hopes to make her first final appearance since the 2017 Mallorca Open and the fifth of her career. Sevastova has lost four of her last five semifinal appearances. Sevastova has won seven of her last nine matches on clay court.
These two have played seven times and Goerges has won four of those meetings. The most recent match was in this years Indian Wells Masters, a match Sevastova won in straight sets. Sevastova has won two of the last three matches, and five of the seven meetings have been decided in straight sets. This will be the first ever meeting on clay court.
Goerges is playing at a really high level right now and gets a lot of free points with her serve. However, we can’t ignore the fact Sevastova just beat her in straight sets a few weeks ago. In the win, Sevastova ate her second serve alive, won 45 percent of her return points and dropped just nine first serve points. Sevastova has every part of her game working right now and has been the more balanced player this tournament overall.
I like Sevastova to reach her fifth career final appearance.
