Sachia Vickery and Timea Babos meet in the semifinals of the 2018 tennis Monterrey Open.
Sachia Vickery is coming off a straight sets win over Magdalena Rybarikova that took 15 games to decide. In the victory, Vickery won 74 percent of her first serve points and 57 percent of her second serve points. Vickery continues what has been a breakout season at 22 years old, as she just beat a top-20 player with ease, which included winning 68 percent of her service points and not being broken once. Vickery has now won nine of her last 13 sets, and you can see the confidence growing as she makes deeper tournament runs and is beating respectable players. While the sample size of this consistent success is short, Vickery is quickly turning heads and has the raw ability to rapidly climb the rankings. Vickery hopes to make her first ever WTA final appearance. Vickery has won five of her last seven final appearances, all victories coming in ITF play. Vickery has won seven of her last nine matches on hard court.

Timea Babos is coming off a straight sets win over Monica Puig that took 18 games to decide. In the victory, Babos won 92 percent of her first serve points and 71 percent of her second serve points. Babos had little trouble in her quarterfinal victory that included winning 82 of her total service points. Babos came into this tournament hit or miss, but she’s been lights out with her first serve as of late and hasn’t been broken once in her last two matches. With Babos serving the way she has in her last three matches, she’s going to be a tough out for anyone left in this draw. Babos hopes to make her second final of the year and the eighth of her career. Babos has won each of her last five semifinal appearances. Babos has won five of his last eight matches on hard court.
These two have played twice and Babos has won both meetings. The most recent match was in the 2015 Monterrey Open and the other match was in the 2012 Connecticut Open. I’m not sure either match does much help in picking this game given that both players have improved since.
Babos obviously has more experience in these type of matches and has been ridiculous with her serve recently. This won’t be an easy match at all for the young American. However, Vickery is a player who is starting to grow on me, as she beat quality players in Indian Wells, is playing clean tennis and is showing the skill set of somebody who could soon be a top-30 or so player. Vickery is a player to keep an eye on while the rest of the casual fans and/or oddsmakers are still sleeping.
I’m on the Vickery hype train, and I’m picking the American to reach her first WTA final.
