Alexander Zverev and Richard Gasquet meet in the quarterfinals of the 2018 tennis Monte Carlo Masters.
Alexander Zverev is coming off a three sets win over Jan-Lennard Struff that took 30 games to decide. In the victory, Zverev won 60 percent of his first serve points and 41 percent of his second serve points. Zverev had another subpar performance in which he struggled with his serve and had seven double faults. However, the soon to be 21-year-old was able to dig deep and find a way to grind out a victory. Just a couple years ago, Zverev would lose matches he wasn’t completely dominating, so we’re seeing the young star grow up quickly. Zverev has won five of his last seven quarterfinal appearances. Zverev hopes to make his fourth career semifinal trip in a ATP World Tour Masters 1000. Zverev has won eight of his last nine matches on clay court.

Richard Gasquet is coming off a straight sets win over Mischa Zverev that took 20 games to decide. In the victory, Gasquet won 66 percent of his first serve points and 45 percent of his second serve points. Gasquet managed to win 48 percent of his return points and gave himself 12 break chances. Gasquet is starting to look like his old self on clay court and is moving quite well this tournament, something we couldn’t have said on hard court this season. Gasquet has split his last six quarterfinal appearances. Gasquet hopes to make his first semifinal in a ATP World Tour Masters 1000 since the 2013 Miami Masters. Gasquet hasn’t made the semifinals of the Monte Carlo Masters since 2005. Gasquet has won 11 of his last 12 matches on clay court.
These two have played three times and Zverev has won all three meetings. The most recent match was in the 2017 Canadian Masters, a match he won in three sets. All three matches took place last year, and two of the three matches were decided in three sets. These two have never played on clay.
Gasquet has been competitive despite his losses to Zverev, so this match likely isn’t going to be a cakewalk. However, Gasquet has been hit or miss much of this season and hasn’t exactly had a breakthrough win this tournament to prove he’s capable of beating the top tier guys at this point. Zverev continues to find ways to win and is showing he’s much more ahead of the curve in terms of these young stars. It’s also Zverev’s birthday, and you know he’s not trying to be bounced in a big tournament on his birthday.
Zverev has given you no reason to bet against him this season.
