Coco Vandeweghe and Caroline Garcia meet in the semifinals of the 2018 tennis Stuttgart Open.

Coco Vandeweghe is coming off a straight sets win over Simona Halep that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Vandeweghe won 76 percent of her first serve points and 52 percent of her second serve points. Vandeweghe simply dominated the top ranked player in the world, which included winning 68 percent of her service points and breaking her three times. Vandeweghe now has two wins over top-10 players this year and finds herself in her first semifinal of the year. Despite playing little tennis so far this season, Vandeweghe is hitting the ball very well and is never short on confidence. Vandeweghe has won seven of her last 10 semifinal appearances. Vandeweghe hopes to make her first final since last years WTA Elite Trophy and her sixth final appearance of her career. Vandeweghe has won four of her last five matches on indoor clay court.

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

Caroline Garcia is coming off a three sets win over Elina Svitolina that took 33 games to decide. In the victory, Garcia won 56 percent of her first serve points and 73 percent of her second serve points. Garcia lost a tough first set tiebreak but managed to dig deep and produce six breaks. That seems to be the formula for Garcia this year, as she’s made many comebacks after getting off to slow starts. While it’s encurging and should provide confidence, you’d like to see Garcia play more consistent tennis. Garcia has lost five of her last seven semifinal appearances. Garcia hopes to make her first final appearance since last years China Open and the eighth of her career. Garcia has won five of her last seven matches on indoor clay court.

These two have split their previous two meetings, as CoCo won in Wuhan back in 2015 and Garcia won in Wuhan of 2014. The most recent match went the distance.

You can make a case for either one of these players, as they both have power and can dictate the pace in long rallies. It’s likely going to be whoever makes less unforced errors who wins this match. However, Vandeweghe had to work less in her quarterfinal match, and I am concerned with the constant slow starts from Garcia. It’s only so many times Garcia can bounce back after digging a deep here.

I’ll side with the American in this toss-up match.
