Alexander Zverev and Evgeny Donskoy meet in the second round of the 2018 tennis Madrid Masters.

Alexander Zverev started the season with inconsistent play, but he enters this tournament in great form and is fresh off winning the Bavarian Championships. Zverev has won each of his last eight sets played and is coming off a match in which he got 80 percent of his first serves in play. Zverev is a real threat to build on last years quarterfinal appearance and win this tournament if he can stay in that form. It all comes down to Zverev and his serve, as he can be very beatable when he’s not confident with his service game. Zverev has lost in the second round of a Masters 1000 three times since 2017. Zverev has won seven of his last eight matches on clay court.

Alexander Zverev vs. Evgeny Donskoy 2018 Madrid Masters Tennis Pick, Preview, Odds, Prediction

Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

Evgeny Donskoy is coming off a three sets win over Stefanos Tsitsipas that took 35 games to decide. In the victory, Donskoy won 72 percent of his first serve points and 53 percent of his second serve points. Donskoy had to play a lot of tennis to win his match, but he won 66 percent of his total service points and was broken once despite giving his opponent 20 chances. Donskoy, who has very little ATP success for his career, has played three lengthy matches just to get to this point, and you have to question how much he has left in the tank against a rested Zverev. Donskoy is pretty much playing with house money at this point. Donskoy has one career win over a top-10 player, which came against Rodger Federer in 2017. Donskoy has split his last six matches on clay court.

These two have played once, which was in the 2017 Wimbledon, a match Zverev won in straight sets. The match took 32 games to be decided.

Zverev has quietly found his form as of late and is playing some of his best tennis of the season currently. Donskoy has almost zero success on the ATP tour and came into this tournament losing eight straight matches on clay.

Zverev wins in straight sets.
