Goerges vs. Garcia
The Line: -- Over/Under: See the Latest Odds
Caroline Garcia and Julia Goerges meet in the third round of the 2018 tennis Madrid Masters.
Caroline Garcia is coming off a straight sets win over Petra Martic that took 21 games to decide. In the victory, Garcia won 65 percent of her first serve points and 67 percent of her second serve points. Garcia continues to play some of her best tennis of the season on clay and has won her last two matches in straight sets. Garcia is coming off a match in which 81 percent of her first serves got in play and was only broken twice, which is an improvement on past matches. As long as Garcia avoids silly unforced errors, she is going to be a threat against anyone left in this field. Garcia hopes to make the quarterfinals of the Madrid Masters for the first time since 2014. Garcia has won six of her last matches on clay court.

Julia Goerges is coming off a three sets win over Lara Arruabarrena that took 26 games to decide. In the victory, Goerges won 80 percent of her first serve points and 46 percent of her second serve points. Goerges showed great heart after losing the first set of her second round victory, and she won 43 percent of her return points and broke four times. Goerges has racked up 22 aces in her last two matches, but she can still improve on her second serve if she hopes to take that next step. Still, Goerges is finding ways to win matches despite being capable of playing better than what she has. Goerges hopes to make her second career quarterfinal in a Premier Mandatory. Goerges has won six of her last seven matches on clay court.
These two have played once, which was in Beijing of 2016, a match Garcia won in three sets. The match took 29 games to be decided.
Goerges is worth a look here based on her ability to get free points with her serve, but Garcia is the better and more consistent player at this point, and I trust her more as long as she avoids another mental breakdown. Garcia has been really strong so far this tournament and seems to have put the frustrating loss to Coco Vandeweghe behind her. If Garcia plays clean tennis, it’s going to be tough for Goerges to keep up.
I like Garcia to get the victory here.
