Novak Djokovic and Kyle Edmund meet in the second round of the 2018 tennis Madrid Masters.
Novak Djokovic is coming off a straight sets win over Kei Nishikori that took 22 games to decide. In the victory, Djokovic won 72 percent of his first serve points and 59 percent of his second serve points. Djokovic has been trying to find his footing all season long, but he looked sharp in his first round victory, getting 68 percent of his first serves in play and breaking three times. You’d still like to see Djokovic be better with his second serve and the unforced errors can drop a bit, but it was overall one of his better showings of this small smile size of a season. Djokovic now hopes to win at least two matches in a single tournament for the second time since the Australian Open. Djokovic has lost in the second round of Masters 1000 three times since 2014. Djokovic has split his last six matches on clay court.

Kyle Edmund is coming off a straight sets win over Daniil Medvedev that took 16 games to decide. In the victory, Edmund won 66 percent of his first serve points and 65 percent of his second serve points. Edmund crushed in his opening victory, which included winning 50 percent of his return points and not being broken once. We know what Edmund is capable of when hitting the ball well, but clay has never been his favorite surface, as he’s a power player who struggles to execute on this slow clay. Edmund hopes to make the third round of a Masters 1000 for the first time in his career. Edmund has won five of his last eight matches on clay court.
These two have played three times and Djokovic has won all three meetings. The most recent match was in the 2017 Indian Wells Masters, a match Djokovic won in straight sets. Edmund has never won a set against Djokovic in three matches.
Djokovic has the rest advantage over Edmund and has won all seven sets against him. Djokovic also looked sharp in his debut, which is the only issue for him given his recent injury history.
Hard not to like Djokovic to win this match.
