Simona Halep and Kristyna Pliskova meet in the third round of the 2018 tennis Madrid Masters.
Simona Halep is coming off a straight sets win over Elise Mertens that took 15 games to decide. In the victory, Halep won 85 percent of her first serve points and 57 percent of her second serve points. Halep continues her great form this season as she gears up for a run in the French Open, and she’s dropped a combined four games in her first two matches. Halep is coming off a match in which she won 75 percent of her total service points and wasn’t broken once. If Halep is going to play at that level consistently, she’s going to win this tournament and will be a real threat for her first major in a few weeks. Halep hopes to make the quarterfinals of the Madrid Masters for the fourth time in the last five years. Halep has won 12 of her last 14 matches on clay court.

Kristyna Pliskova is coming off a straight sets win over Sara Sorribes Tormo that took 20 games to decide. In the victory, Pliskova won 78 percent of her first serve points and 52 percent of her second serve points. Pliskova served well enough to win her match, but winning 53 percent of her return points and breaking five times was the key. Everybody knows the Pliskova sisters can serve with the best of them, but she’s going to have that much success with her return, she has a chance to make a very deep run. Pliskova has three career wins over top-10 players and two of those victories have taken place this year. Pliskova has won six of her last seven matches on clay court.
These two have played twice and Halep has won both of those meetings in straight sets. The matches took place in this years Indian Wells Masters and last years Madrid Masters. Pliskova has won a combined 11 games against Halep in four sets.
Pliskova has caught fire on clay recently, but she’s not Halep, who has been chewing up opponents and spitting them out recently. Halep has also had no trouble in the past against Pliskova, and both of those matches are recent.
The two-time defending champ, there’s no reason to think Halep won’t win this match in straight sets.
