Alexander Zverev and John Isner meet in the quarterfinals of the 2018 tennis Madrid Masters.
Alexander Zverev is coming off a straight sets win over Leonardo Mayer that took 18 games to decide. In the victory, Zverev won 82 percent of his first serve points and 83 percent of his second serve points. Zverev is coming off a match in which he lost just eight service points and face just one break point. Pure dominance. Zverev is showing little sign of fatigue despite playing a truckload of tennis, as he’s building on his Bavarian Championships title and has now won each of his last 12 sets played. When the young Zverev gets into one of these stretches, he’s a tough player to break the confidence of, as he hits the ball with a lot of zip and swagger. Zverev has won each of his last four quarterfinal matches. Zverev hopes to make his fifth career semifinal in a ATP World Tour Masters 1000 and the first ever in the Madrid Masters. Zverev has won nine of his last 10 matches on clay court.

John Isner is coming off a three sets win over Pablo Cuevas that took 39 games to decide. In the victory, Isner won 80 percent of his first serve points and 69 percent of his second serve points. Isner managed to win a marathon match by winning 77 percent of his service points and producing 32 aces. Isner now has a combined 54 aces in his last two matches, and that’s classic performances from the American, who may not play pretty tennis but just finds ways to win when his opponent fails to match point for point. It’s frustrating to play Isner when he’s in this current form, as it’s a mental game at this point. Isner has won four of his last six quarterfinal appearances. Isner hopes to make a Masters 1000 semifinal for the sixth time since 2016. Isner has never made the semifinals of the Madrid Masters. Isner has won five of his last six matches on clay court.
These two have played four times and Zverev has won three of those meetings. The most recent match was in this years Miami Masters, a match Isner won in three sets. Three of the four matches have gone the distance. Zverev won the only meeting against Isner on clay.
Zverev has the advantage here due to the match being on clay, as Isner isn’t as effective with his powerful serve as he is on hard court. Zverev has also shown he can handle the power of Isner despite having trouble at times like everybody else. You also have to question how much Isner has left in the tank, as the big man tires easily in these lengthy matches. The younger Zverev has the edge here across the board.
I like Zverev to reach the semifinals.
