Kyle Edmund and Denis Shapovalov meet in the quarterfinals of the 2018 tennis Madrid Masters.

Kyle Edmund is coming off a straight sets win over David Goffin that took 18 games to decide. In the victory, Edmund won 86 percent of his first serve points and 59 percent of his second serve points. Edmund lost just four service points overall and has been broken just three times combined in his last three matches. Edmund came into this tournament in shaky form, but he’s serving well and has a chance at a breakthrough performance, something the 23-year-old has struggled to get. As long as Edmund is getting free points with his serve, he’s going to be a tough out. Edmund has a chance at his first ever semifinal in a ATP World Tour Masters 1000. Edmund has won five of his last seven quarterfinal matches. Edmund has won eight of his last 11 matches on clay court.

Kyle Edmund vs. Denis Shapovalov 2018 Madrid Masters Tennis Pick, Preview, Odds, Prediction

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Denis Shapovalov is coming off a straight sets win over Milos Raonic that took 20 games to decide. In the victory, Shapovalov won 78 percent of his first serve points and 62 percent of his second serve points. Shapovalov ended up winning 72 percent of his total service points and only faced one break point, which he ended up saving. Shapovalov has been serving out of his mind this tournament, and while he came into this thing struggling big time on clay, he’s proven over the years that he’s a young guy to watch when hitting his spots. Shapovalov is clearly playing some of the better tennis we’ve seen from him this season and is dangerous given his confidence is back. Shapovalov has a chance to make his second career semifinal in a ATP World Tour Masters 1000. Shapovalov has split his last six matches on clay court.

These two have split their previous four meetings. Edmund won in this year of Brisbane and back in 2017 Canada vs. Germany. Shapovalov won the 2017 meetings in Queen’s and the US Open. This will be their first match on clay.

Shapovalov had zero success on clay before this tournament, so it’s kind of hard to trust him just after a couple of matches. Edmund is obviously riding high on confidence and did make the final of the Grand Prix Hassan II, so he has more consistency on this surface. Edmund’s game translate better to clay, and he did win the most recent meeting between these two.

Tough match, but I’m siding with the German.
