Denis Shapovalov and Alexander Zverev meet in the semifinals of the 2018 tennis Madrid Masters.

Denis Shapovalov is coming off a three sets win over Klye Edmund that took 35 games to decide. In the victory, Shapovalov won 80 percent of his first serve points and 67 percent of his second serve points. Shapovalov continues to hit his spots, as he won 74 percent of his total service points and had 11 aces. Shapovalov is hitting the ball with a great deal of confidence, and while his return could certainly use some work, he’s putting extreme pressure on his opponent to play perfect tennis. Shapovalov has won no less than 75 percent of his first serve points in each of his last four matches, a percentage that gives him an honest chance to win the biggest tournament of his career. Shapovalov has split his last six semifinal appearances. Shapovalov hopes to make his first career ATP final appearance and his first final appearance overall since the 2017 Challenger de Gatineau. Shapovalov is 0-1 in his career in World Tour Masters 1000 semifinal appearances. Shapovalov has split his last eight matches on clay court.

Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

Alexander Zverev is coming off a straight sets win over John Isner that took 22 games to decide. In the victory, Zverev won 83 percent of his first serve points and 100 percent of his second serve points. Zverev was able to grind out a victory against the big man by winning 88 percent of his service points and giving himself seven break chances. Zverev has now won each of his last 14 sets played and has a chance to reach the final in three of his last four tournaments. Zverev is simply in quite the groove right now and will soon be challenging for the No. 1 ranking in the world if he can remain in this form. Zverev has won five of his last eight semifinal appearances. Zverev hopes to make his third final appearance of the year and his fourth ever final appearance in a World Tour Masters 1000. Zverev has won seven straight matches on clay court.

These two have played once, which was in the 2017 Canadian Masters, a match Zverev won in straight sets. The match took 22 games to be decided.

This is going to be a fun match between two of the best young players in the world and two guys who can spray winners with the best of them. It’s a must watch for all tennis fans. But in terms of picking a winner, I have to side with Zverev. He’s been crazy consistent this year and has won 14 straight sets on clay. Zverev has also been sharper with his return, and if he could find success against Isner, Shapovalov should be easier.

Zverev makes his third final of the year.
