Karolina Pliskova and Maria Sakkari meet in the second round of the 2018 tennis Rome Masters.

Karolina Pliskova enters this tournament with a 23-7 record and is coming off a semifinals appearance in the Madrid Masters. Pliskova hasn’t been able to get a great deal of aces that we’re used to seeing from her on hard court, but she’s getting a high percentage of her first serves in play and that’s been good enough. Pliskova has been broken once each in three of her last four victories and has now won 14 of her last 17 sets played on clay court. Pliskova is one of the hotter players in the field at the moment and has shown she’s no longer just a one trick pony, as she’s gaining more and more confidence on this slow surface. Pliskova has won nine of her last 11 matches on clay court.

Karolina Pliskova vs. Maria Sakkari 2018 Rome Masters Tennis Pick, Preview, Odds, Prediction

Jayne Kamin-Oncea-USA TODAY Sports

Maria Sakkari is coming off a three sets win over Kiki Bertens that took 27 games to decide. In the victory, Sakkari won 64 percent of her first serve points and 50 percent of her second serve points. Sakkari beat one of the hotter players on tour by winning 60 percent of his service points and breaking seven times. Sakkari has to be better with her serve if she’s going to go deeper in the tournament, but her return game has been solid and she’s produced a combined eight breaks in her last three matches. Sakkari has one career win over a top-10 player, which was in 2017 in the Wuhan Open against Caroline Wozniacki. Sakkari has won five of his last eight matches on clay court.

This will be the first ever meeting between these two players.

Sakkari is capable of a win here considering she just beat Bertens, who was playing some of her best tennis on clay. But Pliskova has been incredibly good with her serve as of late despite the number of aces on this slow surface. She’s still controlling the point and has been as tough as ever to break.

Hard to bet against Pliskova in this match.
