Peter Gojowczyk and Lorenzo Sonego meet in the second round of the 2018 tennis Rome Masters.

Peter Gojowczyk is coming off a straight sets win over Sam Querrey that took 21 games to decide. In the victory, Gojowczyk won 82 percent of her first serve points and 59 percent of her second serve points. Gojowczyk is coming off his biggest win in quite some time, as he came into this tournament losing his last six matches, and then he beats a top-20 player in the world in straight sets. Gojowczyk now hopes to win back-to-back matches for the first time since making the final in Delray Beach. Gojowczyk must be better with second serve in order for that to happen, obviously. Gojowczyk has a chance to make the third round of a ATP World Tour Masters 1000 for the first time in his career. Gojowczyk has lost five of his last eight matches on clay court.

Peter Gojowczyk vs. Lorenzo Sonego 2018 Rome Masters Tennis Pick, Preview, Odds, Prediction

Robert Deutsch-USA TODAY Sports

Lorenzo Sonego is coming off a three sets win over Adrian Mannarino that took 30 games to decide. In the victory, Sonego won 78 percent of her first serve points and 50 percent of her second serve points. Sonego showed great fight in the opening round, as he came back despite losing the first set 2-6. Sonego has very little experience on the main tour, but he did just make the quarterfinals in Budapest and picked up a win over Richard Gasquet. Sonego has shown recently that the lack of experience doesn’t mean much, as he fights for points and usually competes at a high level even in a loss. Also, you can expect the crowd to once again be on his side considering the 23-year-old is Italian, so he’ll get that extra boost of confidence when needed. Sonego has won six of his last nine matches on clay court.

This will be the first time these two have played on the tennis court.

Gojowczyk is obviously the more accomplished player, but he’s just as wet behind the ears in terms of big matches. Gojowczyk has never made the third round of a big match in his life. Sonego has a quality win under his belt recently and is playing in his own backyard, which can do wonders for players. Gojowczyk has also been awful on his second serve in his last several matches.

I’m going to predict the upset and back Sonego.
