Elina Svitolina and Angelique Kerber meet in the quarterfinals of the 2018 tennis Rome Masters.
Elina Svitolina is coming off a three sets win over Daria Kasatkina that took 17 games to decide. In the victory, Svitolina won 60 percent of her first serve points and 33 percent of her second serve points. Svitolina struggled big time with her serve and was broken five times, but she managed to dig deep and win, especially after losing the first set 0-6. Svitolina will obviously need to be much sharper if she hopes to advance and it starts with her serve, as she’s been broken a combined nine times in her last three matches. Still, Svitolina has proven this season she can still beat quality players without playing her best. Svitolina hopes to make the semifinals of a WTA Premier 5 tournament for the sixth time in her career. Svitolina has won seven of her last nine matches on clay court.

Angelique Kerber is coming off a straight sets win over Maria Sakkari that took 14 games to decide. In the victory, Kerber won 77 percent of her first serve points and 67 percent of her second serve points. Kerber won 74 percent of her total service points and wasn’t broken once in the victory, as she looked like the Kerber we’re used to seeing, not the inconsistent version she often has been recently. It was one of Kerber’s more complete performances n quite some time, but you have to question how long it will continue give her hit or miss results over the last few months. Kerber hopes to make her fifth WTA Premier 5 tournament semifinal since 2015. Kerber has won five of her last eight matches on clay court.
These two have played 12 times in the past and Svitolina has won seven of those meetings. The most recent match was in Dubai of this year, a match Svitolina won in straight sets. Svitolina has won the last five meetings against Kerber, including the only match on clay.
Kerber may be in slightly better form, but I don’t trust her to put together back-to-back great performances given her hit and miss results. Svitolina has been head and shoulders the more consistent player and has shown just how dominant she can be when engaged. Svitolina has also beaten Kerber in five straight meetings.
Hard to bet against Svitolina in this match.
