Marin Cilic and Alexander Zverev meet in the semifinals of the 2018 tennis Rome Masters.

Marin Cilic is coming off a straight sets win over Pablo Carreno Busta that took 18 games to decide. In the victory, Cilic won 96 percent of his first serve points and 70 percent of his second serve points. Cilic lost just one first serve point in his quarterfinal victory and won 84 percent of his total service points. Cilic has been serving at a very high level this tournament and has now won each of his last six sets played. If Cilic can continue to play at this level, he has a legit shot to make his first final appearance since the Australian Open. Cilic has lost four of his last five semifinal appearances. Cilic hopes to make his second final appearance of the year and his second final appearance in a Masters 1000 of his career. Cilic has won five of his last seven matches on clay court.

Susan Mullane-USA TODAY Sports

Alexander Zverev is coming off a straight sets win over David Goffin that took 28 games to decide. In the victory, Zverev won 75 percent of his first serve points and 61 percent of his second serve points. Zverev won 71 percent of his total service points and got 75 percent of his first serves in play. Zverev continues to serve at a ridiculous percentage and it’s been key during this winning stretch, as it’s gotten him out of trouble as well. When you give your opponent almost zero looks at a second serve, you’re in control of pretty much every point off your racket. Zverev is in quite the zone at the moment. Zverev has won six of his last nine semifinal appearances. Zverev hopes to make his fourth final appearance of the year and his fifth career Masters 1000 final appearance. Zverev has won 12 straight matches on clay court.

These two have played five times and Zverev has won four of those matches. The most recent meeting was in the 2017 ATP World Tour Finals, a match Zverev won in three sets. Cilic’s only win over Zverev came in the 2015 Citi Open, the first meeting between these two players.

I said it yesterday, I’m not betting against Zverev in his current form. Well, at least when he’s not playing Nadal. Zverev is serving out of his mind for the most part and is finding ways to hit the ball with great pace despite this slow surface. Zverev has also owned Cilic in the last four meetings.

Zverev reaches the final.
