Garcia-Lopez vs. Wawrinka

TV: Tennis, NBC

Stan Wawrinka and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez meet in the first round of the 2018 tennis French Open.

Stan Wawrinka continues to work his way back from injury and isn’t having much recent success, as he's lost five of his last six matches. Wawrinka is coming off a straight sets loss to Marton Fucsovics in which he won just six of 16 second serve points and was broken five times. It’s likely only a matter of time before Wawrinka gets back on track considering he’s played just 10 matches since the 2017 Wimbledon, but this isn’t the form you want to see from a guy who has made the French Open final two of the last three years. It’s hard to trust Wawrinka with the way he’s playing. Wawrinka has lost in the first round of a grand slam twice since 2014. Wawrinka has won 10 of his last 12 matches on clay.

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Guillermo Garcia-Lopez is currently making a run in Lyon and is playing his best tennis of the year by far on clay. Garcia-Lopez has a win over Kei Nishikori after he retired after the first set and he did beat Pablo Carreno Busta earlier in the year, so there’s some highlights of the season for the soon to be 35 year old. Garcia-Lopez has always had a hit or miss career with very little success on the big stage, but he’s always played his best on this surface and can never ben counted out. Garcia-Lopez has 13 career wins over top-10 players, one of those victories coming this year. Garcia-Lopez has lost in the first round of a grand slam three of his last six appearances. Garcia-Lopez has split his last six matches on clay.

These two have played 12 times and Wawrinka has won nine of those matches. The most recent meeting was in the 2016 Maharashtra Open, a match Wawrinka won in straight sets. Wawrinka’s last loss to Garcia-Lopez came in the 2014 French Open, and they’ve split the six matches on clay court.

Garcia-Lopez plays his best tennis on clay and has beaten Wawrinka three times on this surface. Wawrinka is playing horribly as he works his way back from injury and usually is always a threat to lose early in grand slam play. He’s one of those players who improves the deeper he goes. You can't bet on Wawrinka in his current form with a straight face.

Call me crazy, but Garcia-Lopez has a chance to pull off one of the bigger upsets of the first round. I’ll take a shot here.
