TV: Tennis, NBC

Marin Cilic and Steve Johnson meet in the third round of the 2018 tennis French Open.

Marin Cilic is coming off a four sets win over Hubert Hurkacz that took 41 games to decide. In the victory, Cilic won 76 percent of his first serve points and 57 percent of his second serve points. Cilic won 68 percent of his total service points and was broken just once in his second round victory. Cilic also hit 48 winners, but he could certainly clean up the 52 unforced errors to help make his matches an easier victory. Regardless, Cilic clearly has momentum after his semifinal trip in the Rome Masters and looks to be a very confident play at the moment. Cilic hopes to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the fifth time in his last eight appearances. Cilic has won seven of his last 10 matches on clay court.

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Steve Johnson is coming off a four sets win over Jan-Lennard Struff that took 39 games to decide. In the victory, Johnson won 77 percent of his first serve points and 44 percent of his second serve points. Johnson won 65 percent of his total service points and had just 27 unforced errors in four sets. Johnson entered this tournament playing some of his best tennis in quite some time, which includes winning the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships last month. Unfortunately, Johnson has very little grand slam success and has never made the fourth round of the French Open. Johnson hopes to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the first time since the 2016 Wimbledon. Johnson has won 11 of his last 13 matches on clay court.

These two have played four times and Cilic has won all four meetings. The most recent match was in the 2017 Shanghai Masters, a match Cilic won in straight sets. This will be the first ever meeting on clay.

Johnson is worth a look as a possible underdog given his current form, but you can’t ignore the glaring head to head numbers and the fact Cilic has been one of the more consistent grand slam payers the last couple of years. Cilic has become a consistent quarterfinal grand slam player, which includes making it in last years French Open. The shotmaking ability of Cilic should give him the edge over the American.

Cilic wins in three or four sets.
