Rafael Nadal and Richard Gasquet meet in the third round of the 2018 tennis French Open.
Rafael Nadal is coming off a straight sets win over Guido Pella that took 22 games to decide. In the victory, Nadal won 85 percent of his first serve points and 65 percent of his second serve points. Nadal lost just five of 34 first set points and wasn’t broken once in his second round victory. Nadal can still clean up his unforced errors and be a little sharper with his second serve, but that’s being a little picky with the French Open favorite. Nadal is simply steamrolling the competition and is showing no signs of slowing down. Nadal hopes to make the fourth round of a grand slam for his seventh straight appearance. Nadal has lost in the third round of the French Open just once in his career. Nadal has won 10 of his last 11 matches on clay court.

Richard Gasquet is coming off a four sets win over Malek Jaziri that took 32 games to decide. In the victory, Gasquet won 79 percent of his first serve points and 57 percent of his second serve points. Gasquet got 69 percent of his first serves in play and hit five aces, a formula that would allow him to compete in this match if he can continue. Gasquet needs as many free points as possible to hang in this match and get a rhythm going, as Nadal isn’t giving away anything easy. Gasquet has 31 career wins over top-10 players, but only three of those have come since 2016. Gasquet hopes to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the first time since the 2016 Wimbledon. Gasquet has split his last eight matches on clay court.
These two have played 16 times and Nadal has won 15 of those meetings. The most recent match was in the 2017 Cincinnati Masters, a match Nadal won in straight sets. Gasquet’s only win over Nadal came in 2003 challenger play, the first ever meeting.
As if betting against Nadal wasn’t an option before, he’s now getting a guy he hasn’t lost to in 15 straight meetings. Nadal is also 6-0 against Gasquet on clay court.
Nadal makes the fourth round of the French Open.
