Serena Williams and Julia Goerges meet in the third round of the 2018 tennis French Open.
Serena Williams is coming off a three sets win over Ashleigh Barty that took 28 games to decide. In the victory, Serena won 70 percent of her first serve points and 56 percent of her second serve points. Serena won 65 percent of her total service points and hit 28 winners in her second round victory. It was another decent performance from Serena, but she did hit 36 unforced errors and struggled big time with her second serve. It’s a work in progress for the former No. 1 player in the world, but many didn’t have her making it out of the first two rounds. So, victories at this point no matter how they come is good news for the American. Serena hopes to make the fourth round of a grand slam for her 11th straight appearance. Serena has won 10 of her last 11 matches on clay court.

Julia Goerges is coming off a straight sets win over Alison Van Uytvanck that took 25 games to decide. In the victory, Goerges won 69 percent of her first serve points and 60 percent of her second serve points. Goerges won 66 percent of her total service points and hit 34 winners in her second round victory. Goerges has a real chance of advancing here as well if she can continue to control the point and keep her unforced errors under 25. Goerges came into this tournament playing some decent tennis and has become more confident with her shotmaking ability as of late. Goerges hopes to make the fourth round of a grand slam for the second time since 2016. Goerges has made the fourth round of the French Open just once in her career. Goerges has won seven of her last 10 matches on clay court.
These two have played twice and Serena has won both meetings. The matches took place in the 2011 Canadian Masters and 2010 French Open. Both meetings were won in straight sets.
This is a match that should favor Goerges, but the more Serena plays, the more the rust goes away and she gains confidence. Serena is far from being Serena, but she’s serving as well as you can expect given her time off, and while the errors are high, she’s sprinkling in enough winners to balance things out. Goerges isn’t a big match player and has very little success on the grand slam stage. This feels like another match that Serena can grind out a victory and do just enough to prevail.
I’ll ride Serena for a third straight match.
